Pascal Gollin from the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group has been appointed as the IBS Young Scientist Fellow as of August 1, 2021. The title of his research proposal was “Structural questions for infinite graphs, digraphs, and matroids“. Congratulations!
The IBS discrete mathematics group welcomes William Overman, a visiting graduate student from the University of California, Irvine. He was a visiting undergraduate student two years ago. He is planning to stay with us until the end of August 2021.
On March 1, 2021, the IBS Biomedical Mathematics Group (BIMAG/의생명수학그룹) is established. It is led by its Chief Investigator, Prof. Jae Kyoung Kim (김재경) from the Department of Mathematical Sciences of KAIST. BIMAG is located on the 3rd floor of the Theory Building of the IBS HQ. As of March 2021, the IBS Center for Mathematical and Computational Sciences has three independent groups; Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG), Data Science Group, and Biomedical Mathematics Group (BIMAG).
On January 4, 2021, Pascal Gollin from the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group received the “Research of the Year” award from the president of IBS. Congratulations!
Dabeen Lee (이다빈) from the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group has been appointed as the IBS Young Scientist Fellow as of January 1, 2021. The title of his research proposal was “Combinatorial Optimization for Data-Driven Decision Making“. Congratulations!
With the vision of “Making Discoveries for Humanity and Society,” the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was founded in 2011 by the Korean government to promote basic science in Korea. To date, IBS has 31 Research Centers and each Center has been yielding outstanding results in various research fields.
The IBS “Young Scientist Fellowship” started in 2016 to play an active role in fostering the next generation of basic science leaders. We believe this Fellowship offers junior scientists opportunities to conduct independent research by utilizing state-of-the-art infrastructure and to grow on the basis of research collaborations with leading researchers.
We hope that the Fellowship serves as a stepping stone for our researchers to mature into leading researchers in basic science.
Within 7 years of obtaining a Ph.D. (obtained no earlier than 1 January 2013) or under the age of 40 with a Ph.D. (born no earlier than 1 January 1980)

The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG) in Daejeon, Korea invites applications for one postdoctoral research fellowship position.

DIMAG is a research group that was established in December 1, 2018 at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), led by Prof. Sang-il Oum. DIMAG is located at the headquarters of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Daejeon, South Korea, a city of 1.5 million people.
The position is available for individuals who are within the first five years after obtaining their Ph.D at the date of appointment or be expected to obtain a Ph.D within three months from the date of appointment. Successful candidates for postdoctoral research fellowship positions will be new or recent Ph.D.’s with outstanding research potential in all fields of discrete mathematics with emphasis on structural graph theory, extremal graph theory, combinatorial optimization, matroid theory, or fixed-parameter tractable algorithms.
This appointment is for two years, and the starting salary is no less than KRW 57,000,000. The appointment is one time renewable up to 3 years in total contingent upon the outstanding performance of the researcher. The expected appointment date is September 1, 2021. This is a purely research position and will have no teaching duties.

The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group welcomes Prof. Heesung Shin (신희성) from Inha University, Incheon, Korea. He will visit the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group for 1 year until August 31, 2021 during his sabbatical leave from Inha University. He received his Ph.D. from KAIST under the supervision of Prof. Dongsu Kim. He was a postdoctoral researcher at CNRS and a research assistant professor at POSTECH. In 2011, he moved as an assistant professor to Inha University, where he is currently a professor.
The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group welcomes Dr. Jinha Kim (김진하) and Dr. Minki Kim (김민기), new research fellows at the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group from September 1, 2020.
Jinha Kim (김진하) received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics at Seoul National University in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Woong Kook. Until recently, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Technion in Israel. She is interested in combinatorics, discrete geometry, topological combinatorics, and graph theory.
Minki Kim (김민기) received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematical Sciences at KAIST in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Holmsen. Until recently, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Technion in Israel. He is interested in discrete geometry, topological combinatorics, and graph theory.
The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group welcomes Prof. Jeong Ok Choi (최정옥) from GIST, Gwangju, Korea. She will visit the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group for 1 year until August 31, 2021 during her sabbatical leave from GIST. She received her Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the supervision of Prof. Douglas West. She was a visiting assistant professor at Furman University and Trinity College. In 2011, she moved to GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) in Gwangju, Korea as an assistant professor and she is currently an associate professor.
