Visiting

IBS Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG) is located on the 3rd floor of the theory building in the IBS headquarters, located in Daejeon, Korea. There is only one major entrance in the IBS headquarters. It is recommended to bring your ID to visit here because one is required to obtain a visitor pass at the lobby.

Cory Palmer from Univ. of Montana

The DIMAG group at IBS in Daejeon, Korea is headed by Sang-il Oum and has 5-6 postdocs from all over the world, a number of PhD students and frequent research visitors. I was a visitor there for two weeks in September 2019. This was one of the most enjoyable and productive research visits I’ve ever had. I was inspired by the environment and attitude of the researchers. Everyone is highly-motivated and eager to collaborate. During my visit I was able to make significant progress on two new projects that I started with members of DIMAG. I also spoke at their well-attended seminar and had many opportunities to discuss research problems with the group. The atmosphere in DIMAG is open and social. I especially enjoyed talking shop over coffee after lunch.

The Institute for Basic Science facilities that house the DIMAG group are world-class. The support staff are friendly and helpful. Between an excellent cafeteria that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; a fully-equipped gym; and easy access to great coffee, I often found myself working well after usual business hours. If you want to step outside for a walk or to work, there is a beautiful botanical garden just across the street from the institute.

I would recommend visiting to anyone working in Discrete Math. Especially to those that have not yet visited Korea. This is a great place to get quality work done. Make sure while you are there to eat some Korean-style BBQ, drink some Soju and visit the famous (and my favorite) Sung Sim Dang bakery!

Parking

A visitor parking lot is available at the main entrance on the Expo-ro. If you are a visitor and request ahead, it is possible to register the car plate number to use the parking lot inside.

Maps

Note that Google Maps are not very useful in Korea. If you have a smartphone (iOS or Android), you may install the following apps before visiting Korea. It can show you public transportation. Also, you may use rome2rio.com to find the travel instructions for long-distance trips in Korea.

Taxi

Taxis in Korea are generally cheaper than in other countries. One of the most popular apps for taxi-hailing service in Korea (with no fee) is “Kakao T” (or Kakao Taxi) but it is complicated for short-term visitors to set up an account. Please read the following website for instructions.

Nowadays, Uber also works in Korea. Usually, it takes longer than the Kakao T to get a taxi but the price will be exactly the same because of the Korean law. Since Uber is much easier for foreigners than Kakao T, we recommend installing it on your phone before coming.
