Welcome Felix Christian Clemen, a new member of the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group

The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group welcomes Dr. Felix Christian Clemen, a new research fellow at the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group, from August 16, 2024. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the supervision of Prof. József Balogh. He is interested in extremal combinatorics, combinatorial geometry, and probabilistic combinatorics.

The 2024 summer school was held at IBS for 2 weeks at IBS with lectures by Boris Bukh (CMU) and Tung Nguyen (Princeton University)

The 2024 summer school was held at IBS for two weeks, from July 29 to August 9, 2024. It was organized by the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group and featured lectures by Boris Bukh from Carnegie Mellon University and Tung Nguyen from Princeton University.

2024 Korean Student Combinatorics Workshop was held in Gongju from July 29 to August 2, 2024

2024 Korean Student Combinatorics Workshop (KSCW2024: 2024 조합론 학생 워크샵)

The 2024 Korean Student Combinatorics Workshop (KSCW2024, 2024 조합론 학생 워크샵) was held in Gongju from July 29 to August 2, 2024. Sponsored by the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group, this event aims to provide a platform for Korean graduate students working on combinatorics and related areas to establish a foundation for collaborative research. It was organized by four students of KAIST/IBS: Donggyu Kim (김동규), Seokbeom Kim (김석범), Seonghyuk Im (임성혁), and Hyunwoo Lee (이현우). The workshop featured two invited talks by Semin Yoo (유세민) and Jungho Ahn (안정호), as well as open problem sessions followed by ample time for joint work.

We are hiring! Senior Research Fellow Position at the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group

The IBS Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG) in Daejeon, Korea invites applications for one senior research fellow position.

DIMAG is a research group that was established on December 1, 2018 at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), led by Chief Investigator, Dr. Sang-il Oum. DIMAG is located at the headquarters of IBS in Daejeon, South Korea, a city of 1.5 million people.

Website: https://dimag.ibs.re.kr/

Currently, DIMAG consists of researchers from various countries and the work is done in English. DIMAG is co-located with the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group (ECOPRO).

Successful candidates for this position are expected to have research experience in Discrete Mathematics, in particular in Structural Graph theory, Combinatorial Optimization, Matroid Theory, and Algorithms, for 10 years or more after their Ph.D.’s.

The appointment is initially for two years and can be extended further after reviews of the research performance until the group’s closure or the retirement age.

The starting annual salary is no less than KRW 96,000,000, if the successful candidate has 10 years or more research experience after Ph.D.’s.

The expected appointment date is June 1, 2025, and it can be adjusted to earlier or later, but no later than September 1, 2025. This is purely research position and will have no teaching duties.

A complete application packet should include:

Euiwoong Lee (이의웅) gave a talk on the parameterized complexity of approximating the minimum size of a deletion set to make a graph belong to a fixed class

Euiwoong Lee

On July 30, 2024, Euiwoong Lee (이의웅) from the University of Michigan gave a talk at the Discrete Math Seminar on the parameterized complexity of approximating the minimum size of a deletion set to make a graph belong to a fixed class. The title of his talk was “Parameterized Approximability of F-Deletion Problems“.

Two of our former members, Dong Yeap Kang (강동엽) and Abhishek Methuku, and their collaborators received the 2024 Frontiers of Science Awards at the International Congress for Basic Science held in China for their paper on the proof of Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture

On July 14, 2024, Two of our former members, Dong Yeap Kang (강동엽) and Abhishek Methuku, and their collaborators (Tom Kelly, Daniela Kühn, and Deryk Osthus) received the 2024 Frontiers of Science Award (FSA) at the International Congress for Basic Science held in Beijing from July 14 to July 26, 2024, for their paper on the proof of Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture published in Annals of Mathematics.
