Euiwoong Lee (이의웅) gave a talk on the parameterized complexity of approximating the minimum size of a deletion set to make a graph belong to a fixed class

Euiwoong Lee

On July 30, 2024, Euiwoong Lee (이의웅) from the University of Michigan gave a talk at the Discrete Math Seminar on the parameterized complexity of approximating the minimum size of a deletion set to make a graph belong to a fixed class. The title of his talk was “Parameterized Approximability of F-Deletion Problems“.

Two of our former members, Dong Yeap Kang (강동엽) and Abhishek Methuku, and their collaborators received the 2024 Frontiers of Science Awards at the International Congress for Basic Science held in China for their paper on the proof of Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture

On July 14, 2024, Two of our former members, Dong Yeap Kang (강동엽) and Abhishek Methuku, and their collaborators (Tom Kelly, Daniela Kühn, and Deryk Osthus) received the 2024 Frontiers of Science Award (FSA) at the International Congress for Basic Science held in Beijing from July 14 to July 26, 2024, for their paper on the proof of Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture published in Annals of Mathematics. Dong Yeap Kang and Abhishek Methuku are former members of the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group. Congratulations!

More than 100 students attended the 2024 Summer School on Combinatorics and Algorithms held at KAIST from July 22 to 26, 2024

More than 100 students attended the 2024 Summer School on Combinatorics and Algorithms from July 22 to 26, 2024. Chien-Chung Huang from ENS Paris and Sebastian Wiederrecht from the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group gave lectures. This event was organized by Jungho Ahn (KIAS), Eunjung Kim (KAIST), Eunjin Oh (POSTECH), and Sang-il Oum (IBS Discrete Mathematics Group / KAIST) and sponsored by the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group, KAIST, and POSTECH.

The IBS-DIMAG Workshop on Combinatorics and Geometric Measure Theory was held at IBS from July 14 to July 19, 2024. There were 23 talks, including plenary talks by János Pach (Rényi Institute of Mathematics) and Pertti Mattila (University of Helsinki) and invited talks by Izabella Łaba (University of British Columbia), Hong Wang (NYU), and Cosmin Pohoata (Emory University).

Organizers

  • Doowon Koh (Chungbuk National University)
  • Ben Lund (IBS Discrete Mathematics Group)
  • Sang-il Oum (IBS Discrete Mathematics Group / KAIST Department of Mathematical Sciences)

Speakers

Welcome Bjarne Schülke, a new member of the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group

The IBS discrete mathematics group welcomes Dr. Bjarne Schülke, a new research fellow at the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group starting July 1, 2024.

Dr. Schülke received his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg in 2021 under the supervision of Christian Reiher and Mathias Schacht. Before joining the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group, he was a Harry Bateman Instructor in Mathematics at Caltech, mentored by David Conlon.

He has won the IBS Young Scientist Fellowship. The title of his YSF project is “Variants of the Hypergraph Turán Problem and Extremal Set Theory.”

Welcome!
