IBS Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG) is one of the research groups in the Center for Mathematical and Computational Sciences, led by its Chief Investigator Sang-il Oum. Established on December 2018, DIMAG aims to carry out top-class research in the field of discrete mathematics and combinatorics. DIMAG is located in the IBS HQ, Daejeon.
Discrete mathematics is an area of mathematics studying the properties and relationship of mathematical objects having discrete structures, unlike many other areas of mathematics dealing with continuous objects. Discrete structures appear naturally in various research fields such as theoretical computer science, probability theory, dynamical systems, network theory, and topology. Because of the emergence of digital computers relying on discrete data structures, discrete mathematics has been actively investigated for the last few decades and is recognized as one of the important subjects.
DIMAG investigates various research subjects in discrete mathematics, such as graph theory, extremal combinatorics, combinatorial optimization, matroid theory, and discrete algorithms. In addition, it aims to create an attractive and active research hub, facilitating collaborations by organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences and attracting visitors.
기초과학연구원 이산수학그룹 (Discrete Mathematics Group, DIMAG)은 수리 및 계산 과학 연구단 내에 속한 연구 그룹 중 하나로, 엄상일 CI가 책임을 맡고 있습니다. 2018년 12월에 설립된 DIMAG은 이산수학 분야 최고 수준의 연구를 하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. DIMAG은 대전 IBS 본원에 위치하고 있습니다.
이산수학은 연속인 대상을 다루는 다른 많은 수학 분야와 달리 이산 구조를 갖는 수학적인 대상의 특징과 관계를 연구하는 수학 분야입니다. 이러한 대상은 이론전산학, 확률론, 동역학계, 네트워크 이론, 위상수학 등 다양한 영역에 자연스럽게 나타납 니다. 특히 이산 구조의 자료를 다루는 컴퓨터가 등장하고 활용되면서 최근 몇 십 년간 이산수학의 중요성이 부각되고 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있습니다.
DIMAG은 그래프 이론, 극단 조합론, 조합적 최적화, 매트로이드 이론, 이산 알고리듬 등 이산수학 내 다양한 연구 주제들을 탐구하고 있습니다. 아울러 세미나, 워크샵, 학회 등을 개최하고 방문자를 유치하여 공동연구를 촉진하는 등 매력적이고 활발한 연구 허브를 구축하고자 합니다.
