    DIMAG is a research group that was established on December 1, 2018 at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), led by its Chief Investigator (CI) Sang-il Oum. DIMAG is located at the headquarters of IBS in Daejeon, South Korea, a city of 1.5 million people. Currently, DIMAG consists of researchers from various countries and the work is done in English. DIMAG is co-located with the IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group (ECOPRO).

    Successful candidates for the research fellowship positions will be new or recent PhDs with outstanding research potential in all fields of Discrete Mathematics with emphasis on Structural Graph Theory, Extremal Graph Theory, Combinatorial Optimization, Matroid Theory, and Algorithms.

    This appointment is for about two years, and the starting salary is no less than KRW 63,000,000. The appointment is one-time renewable up to 5 years in total, contingent upon the outstanding performance of the researcher. The expected appointment date is September 1, 2026, and it can be adjusted to earlier or later, but no later than December 1, 2026. This is purely a research position and will have no teaching duties. However, if desired, successful candidates may have the opportunity to teach at KAIST.

  • Postdoc in Discrete Math at Illinois Tech

    We are hiring a postdoc in Discrete Math at IIT (Illinois Tech) to start in Fall 2022. It is a one year position followed by one year extension subject to performance review and funding. In the past every such position has been extended for the second year.

    We are interested in candidates with broad research interests in discrete mathematics and its applications.  In particular, we are interested in all aspects of graph theory: extremal, enumerative, topological, and spectral; and algorithms and models in network and discrete optimization. Connections to machine learning, graph neural nets, and related computational fields are a plus.

    News: The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Korea is expanding further into discrete mathematics by establishing a new “IBS Extremal Combinatorics and Probability Group (ECOPRO)” led by Hong Liu from the University of Warwick, UK on April 2022. This new group will also be located in the IBS headquarter and is expected to work closely with the IBS Discrete Mathematics Group (DIMAG).

    IBS is inviting applications for Young Scientist Fellowship. The application due is May 31, 2020. To be eligible, one should be within 7 years of obtaining a Ph.D. or under the age of 40 with a Ph.D. (born no earlier than 1 January 1980).

    This is a full-time research position and the appointment is for 3 years with a possible 2-year extension depending on the performance review results. (If a current IBS researcher is appointed as YSF, then the maximum duration is 3 years.)
